Connected courses overcome training lockdown

June 9th, 2020|

As the UK continues to grapple with the changing situation related to the COVID-19 outbreak, Made 2 Measure Mentoring  (M2M2) and CDS Defence & Security (CDS DS) have worked to overcome lockdown restrictions for a key UK military organisation by using an innovative online course assessment that is helping trainees to continue to achieve qualifications.

The interactive assessment system uses iPad cameras video linked to M2M2’s assessment team, supporting an electronic workbook piloted for this specific requirement.

The new approach ensures that trainees are still able to gain accreditation for ILM and City & Guilds qualifications. It also gives M2M2 its choice of assessors from its team based around Europe, whose members would normally attend courses in person but are currently constrained by travel restrictions.

M2M2’s Managing Director (Commercial) Tony Robinson said:

“We have harnessed digital technologies to maintain our full service, which has typically been based on personal attendance at the courses. Although we believe face-to-face contact will always be important in our work, we are also very excited to have proved this alternative approach, which course participants and other trainers have fully embraced as an effective way of assessing trainee performance.

We will be offering accreditation using live and near-live online assessment for the foreseeable future and are exploring ways of incorporating it in our future course development.”

After a successful trial for 10 trainees in early May, which all participants passed, a second session expanded to 92 trainees ran two weeks later and the approach will continue while lockdown is in place. The programme offers the ILM Level 3 in Education and Training plus other elective qualifications. All 92 candidates on the course were successful, two with the support of last-minute video calls to qualify some of their answers.

Richard Bradley, CDS DS Managing Director said of the move:

“Our customer has a commitment to high quality, effective training and the assessment of this training is critical to its success. Therefore, it was vital that we worked to create a solution which allowed us to continue to deliver in our contracted role.  The over 100 assessments completed over the past 12 weeks proves that it’s more than possible to deliver effective performance assessment remotely.
